GARBAGE COLLECTION SCHEDULE
- NORTH of Loop 410 – Tuesday and Friday
- SOUTH of Loop 410 – Monday and Thursday
* Note: See Service Collection Schedule at bottom of page*
The City provides solid waste residential collection services twice per week, through the Public Works Sanitation Department. The Sanitation Department collects the garbage containers from each residence by hand and empties them into the sanitation compactors. Each residence is responsible for providing their own garbage containers, as these are not supplied by the City.
Garbage Collection Requirements
Residential garbage collection is provided twice per week. Household garbage must be bagged and placed in a 32 gallon container with a lid. Collection is limited to the equivalent of THREE 32 gallon size garbage containers per household. There are many styles of containers in 32 gallon size, including those with wheels. (See the images below.) Each container may not be more than 32 gallons and 40 lbs in weight (including contents) due to the fact that garbage collection is done manually and overweight containers can result in injury to our Public Works employees. On collection day, containers must be set out in the alley, or on the street, so as to be easily accessible to the collector. After collection, garbage containers may be placed or stored in the alley abutting the property in an orderly manner so as to not block the alley.
Garbage Collection Times
Containers shall be set out in the alley, where there is one, or be placed so as to be easily accessible to the collector from the street where there is no alley. Garbage containers shall not be placed curbside or in the right-of-way for collection earlier than 6:00 p.m. the day before collection day. After a garbage container has been emptied by the city it shall be removed from the right-of-way of a street at the earliest possible time on the same day of collection.
Garbage collection routes may vary from week to week, depending on work load. If garbage is placed out after 7:00 a.m. and the truck has passed, the truck will not return. Place the garbage out on the next scheduled collection day before 7:00 a.m. for pickup. There is no drop-off of household garbage at any time. For Holiday week collection information, see the "Service Collection Schedule" below.
Items NOT Collected
Household garbage may not contain hazardous or combustible materials, or construction and landscaping materials. Do not place hot ashes, coals, dirt, rocks, concrete, tile, shingles, sheet metal or household hazardous waste (paint, oil, corrosives, batteries, etc.) in the garbage containers. For the safety of all workers, do not place hazardous materials in with other items for collection, as serious injury may occur. The City has a FREE Hazardous Materials Drop-Off program for these types of items. See the Hazardous Materials page for more detailed information.
Over-Limit Garbage Services
Residents who wish to have over-limit household garbage or small bulky items picked up may contact Public Works at 210-342-2341 x206 to obtain a surcharge estimate for these additional services. See the Surcharge Fees page for more detailed information.
- NORTH & SOUTH of Loop 410 – Wednesday only
* Note: See Service Collection Schedule at bottom of page*
The City provides residential brush collection services once per week, through the Public Works Sanitation Department. Each residence is responsible for collecting brush into neat piles and placing it at the curb for collection. Brush collection does not include leaves, recycling, garbage or other items.
Brush Collection Requirements
Residential brush collection is once per week on Wednesday only. Collection is restricted to 3 piles of brush, one time per week. Limbs may not be larger than 3 inches in diameter, and the brush piles may not be larger than the equivalent of a 32-gallon trash can. (An easy way to estimate the equivalent of brush allowed is to turn an empty 32-gallon garbage can on its side. The sideways can measures approximately 2.5 feet high, 2 feet wide, and 5 feet long. The size of the empty can is approximately the allowed size of 1 pile of brush. You may have 3 piles of this size each week, on Wednesday.) Do not include any other items in with the brush (no leaves, garbage, recycling, or hazardous waste.) If other items are mixed with the brush, the piles will not be picked up.
If more than 3 piles are placed out at any one time, the brush will not be picked up. There is NO brush collection on a Holiday week. See the Holiday Brush Collection Schedule below for more details.
Brush Collection Times
Brush collection occurs between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on collection day. All brush piles must be placed out before 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection, but not earlier than 6:00 p.m. on the Saturday before collection day. Brush collection routes may vary from week to week, depending on work load. If brush piles are placed out after 7:00 a.m. and the collection truck has passed, the truck will not return to pick it up. Place the brush out on the next scheduled collection day (the following week) before 7:00 a.m. for pickup. There is no drop-off of brush at any time.
Items NOT Collected
Brush piles may not contain hazardous or combustible materials, or construction and landscaping materials.
For the safety of all workers, do not place hazardous materials in the brush piles, as serious injury may occur. The City has a FREE Hazardous Materials Drop-Off program for these types of items. See the Hazardous Materials page for more detailed information.
